The North Bay Police Service is announcing the results of its bail compliance and warrant execution campaign, Project Genesis.
Throughout November, NBPS's five-member Offender Management Team (OMT) conducted an enhanced enforcement campaign ensuring bail compliance and warrant execution. In total, officers cleared 104 arrest warrants for a variety of offences including:
- sexual assault;
- assault with a weapon;
- theft;
- mischief;
- disguise with intent;
- robbery with violence;
- impaired operation;
- possession of controlled substances;
- and, a variety of firearms-related charges.
Many of the arrest warrants were issued for failing to comply with release orders and failing to attend court.
As part of the campaign, the OMT conducted 36 bail compliance checks on offenders who were released on a variety of offences including robbery, arson, domestic assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, sexual assault and attempted murder. Of those, 17 offenders were found to be non-compliant with their release conditions and were charged accordingly. This amounts to a 53 per cent compliance rate.
The OMT conducted 11 compliance checks on offenders on the Sex Offender Registry and found all to be compliant with their reporting requirements.
Multiple individuals wanted on warrants as well as one offender who was found to be violating their bail conditions were also found with illegal drugs and, in one instance, a prohibited weapon, all of which led to additional charges. In total, the project resulted in the seizure of approximately $ 22,700 worth of illegal drugs, $590 in Canadian currency, and one switchblade-style knife, a prohibited weapon.
“I want to congratulate the members of our Offender Management Team for their exemplary work on Project Genesis,” said NBPS Inspector of Operations Jeff Warner. “Their dedicated work helped to bring a significant number of offenders to justice in our community and also helped to take over $ 22,000 worth of illegal drugs off the streets of North Bay. This is an excellent result by our members.
"I want to remind individuals who are out on bail but violating their conditions and individuals who have a warrant issued against them that we will find you and you will face the consequences of your actions. I want to thank the Ontario Provincial Police for their partnership in this endeavour, as well as the officers on the Offender Management Team, those in our uniformed patrol section, criminal investigations, and the civilian staff who worked collaboratively to ensure this project’s
success.”
