Voodoos acquire speedy forward; move veteran defender

The Powassan Voodoos added some offence by acquiring 18-year-old forward Owen Kahl from the Elliot Lake Vikings for a development fee, the club announced Monday. 

The 5’8” and 181 pound Markham product netted 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 40 games with the Vikings in 2023-24.  

“He is a good skater, he thinks the game well,” said Peter Goulet, Voodoos head coach who has been watching Owen since his U16 days.  

“He has great shot, and he comes from a good family so we are super excited to have him join our hockey team. He was a bit of a sleeper and he should have a breakout season with us. He had some choices and I am pleased he wanted to join us in Powassan.”

Kahl is also thrilled about this opportunity with the Voodoos.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Powassan, I have heard nothing but great things about the organization and the team as a whole and I can’t wait to get started,” said Kahl.

“Playing last year in Elliot lake and having that experience I am looking forward to using it here in Powassan.”

Late last week the Voodoos moved veteran defenceman Michael MacLean to the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Jr. A League for a development fee.  

Maclean played parts of two seasons with the Voodoos scoring 5 times and adding 17 assists in 42 games combined from 2022-23 and 2023-24. Last season Maclean left the Voodoos in the fall after signing with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL. The big defender was returned to the Voodoos in January of 2024.

“Big Mike played a big role in our playoff success the past two seasons and we wish him all the best in Summerside,” said Chris Dawson, Voodoos general manager. 

The Voodoos are back on the ice July 6 and 7 as they host a prospects camp at Pete Palangio arena.
