The North Bay & District U16 AAA Trappers built up a comfortable 3-0 lead and held on after a strong push by the unbeaten Sudbury U18 AAA Nickel Capitals for a 3-2 road win on Wednesday night at Countryside arena in Sudbury.

Marshall McCharles opened the scoring beating Nickel Capitals netminder Logan Carr with a heavy wrister early in the first period.

Nate Gravelle added to the lead deflecting a Heath Bradley shot past Carr to give the Trappers the 2-0 lead.

Caleb Dawson netted the game winner after a nice effort by Masen Wray sent him all alone and he slipped one through the legs for the 3-0 lead.

The Nickel Capitals cut into the lead late in the second period as Ethan Morris fired home a power play marker which made it 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Miguel Renaud got the Caps within one firing a shot that went off a Trappers defender and past Mike Purkhart to make it 3-2.

The Trappers did a good job holding off the Nickel Caps push late which included a 4-minute penalty kill in the last 10 minutes of regulation.

Purkhart finished the game with 20 saves for his third victory of the season.

The win, the Trappers fourth straight moves them into second spot in the Great North Midget League with a 4-2-0-1 record.  The Trappers sit one point out of first place as the U18 Nickel Capitals fall to 5-1.
