The North Bay Jr. Lakers Volleyball Club U16 team, the Oceaners, captured the Gold Medal at the Ontario Volleyball Association’s U16 Girls McGregor Cup this past Saturday.
The team payed in Orillia as part of the Trillium Green F Division.
The team was ranked fourth going into the tournament and finished morning pool play 2-0. This led them to the crossover game where they defeated the Orillia Suns Inferno 2-0 (25-13, 25-20).
In the semi-final game, the Oceaners squared off against the Bounce Empress. This was another win seeing the Oceaners on top in 2 sets (21-25, 15-25). The Oceaners then continued to play strong in the final match and overtook the Durham Attack Infinity to their second 3-set match of the day (10-25, 25-22, 10-15) to win the gold medal. With the win, the team will now move up to the Trillium White Division.
Coach Kristine was very proud that they won the tournament with completely fair play, it was an all-around team effort by everyone. They were undefeated for the day. This is the first gold medal for the club this year.

U18 Squall win McGregor Cup in Barrie
It was also a gold medal weekend for another Jr. Lakers Volleyball team this past Sunday in Barrie.
The U18 Squall won their McGregor Cup as part of the Trillium Green E Division.
The Squall were ranked second in the tournament and made it to playoffs after a first place morning with winning 2 of 2 games during Sunday morning pool play.
They won the crossover game in 2 sets to the 6Up Gravity (25-23, 25-21).
The team was able to come back from a big deficit in the playoffs and ended up winning in the third set to make it to semis.They then went on to semi-final action beating the Titans Hera in a 3-set match (10-25, 25-18, 15-11). In the finals they defeated the Orillia Suns Chaos again in 3-sets (25-20, 15-25, 11-15) to win the gold. They were undefeated all day, .
Coach Megan was proud of her team, the girls worked together as 2 of their players were injured and we had to bring a player up. The Gold medal was a team effort as everyone played in the Gold medal match.
This Gold medal win moves the Squall up a division in the Ontario Volleyball Association to now play in Trillium White.
