Lakers pull out a win over the Queen's Gaels.

The Nipissing Lakers varsity women's hockey team kept rolling as they skated to a dominant 6-2 win over the Queen's Gaels in the team’s only game of the weekend.

The Gaels jumped out to a quick start, finding the back of the net just two minutes into the game to go up 1-0 early.

It only took about five minutes for the Lakers to even things up as they struck on the power play.

After a rebound and scramble, Maggie McKee banged home the loose puck to make it 1-1.

Jill Hennessy and Madison Laberge earned assists on the goal.

Nipissing would strike twice more within a span of four minutes.

Tahlia Fisher gave the Lakers the lead just over a minute later and she broke in all alone and went upstairs for her second of the season.

And three minutes later, Emily Lange buried a power play goal, setup by both Allison and Megan Hayhurst to give the Lakers a two-goal lead.

The three-goal outburst gave Nipissing a two-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.

In the second, the Lakers added two more, taking control of the game.

Ashley Taciuk buried a shorthanded marker early in the middle frame to really put the Lakers in command.

Late in the period, Madison Laberge powered home a shot from the point to make it 5-1 Lakers.

Malory Dominico grabbed the lone helper on the Lakers third power play goal of the contest.

Queen’s would finally stop the Nipissing run of five straight goals with a goal in the final minute of the second period.

Nipissing would regain their four-goal lead midway through the third as Dominico cashed in on a pass from McKee for her ninth of the season.

That was it for the offence, as the Lakers cruised to their ninth straight victory.

Chantelle Sandquist finished with 28 saves, while Nipissing had 30 shots of their own in the contest.

The win improves the Lakers impressive record to 11-1 and top spot in the OUA East.

Nipissing is back in action Wednesday evening when they face the West Division’s top team, the Waterloo Warriors to end the 2024 portion of the Lakers schedule.

Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
