On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday MAY 5, 6 and 7, 2008, the 4th annual cardboard boat races will be held at Memorial Gardens and the YMCA. Grade 7 students from the Nipissing Parry Sound Catholic SB, Near North DSB and Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord will be competing. Each school board will host one of the three days and over 100 teams will be participating.

This event will take place at Memorial Gardens from 9:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and the races will be held at the YMCA from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Our community partners from the YMCA and Memorial Gardens make it possible for all students to participate and have a good time.

The cardboard boat races utilize the basics of design and technology and give young people the opportunity to test their theories against their peers. Each team consists of four students who must design and build a fully functional boat out of cardboard, string, duct tape, contact cement. Teams then compete against one another in timed speed trials. Winners are generally those who can balance a boat with durability and speed, and a healthy dose of team spirit!

Come join us to witness the focus on fun and learning sponsored by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program!
