According to the chairman of the Volunteer Centre of the Blue Sky Region many community groups are struggling to recruit volunteers or members for their organization because they do not know how to make proper use of the media. Colin Thacker points out “ in this day and age, its become not only crucial, but even necessary for non-profits and service groups to cultivate a working relationship with the media as part of their growth and development plan. While it may seem like an obvious method to some, many volunteer organizations fail to submit news releases or public service announcements regarding volunteer opportunities to their local online news source, newspaper, radio and television station.”

Thacker also claims that the media within the Blue Sky Region are always willing to help voluntary groups get their message out to the public, so the opportunity is there for community groups to get their message seen or heard. Developing a knowledge base for volunteer groups is what is needed for some of them to deal effectively with the media and that is where the Volunteer Centre of the Blue Sky Region fits in.

The Volunteer Centre will have a well-known media personality, Peter McKeown, facilitating a morning workshop on Thursday October 4th on how to effectively utilize the media to recruit volunteers or members. The workshop will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion on 150 First Avenue West. Community organizations wishing to attend the workshop can register by calling the Volunteer Centre at 472-0200.
