West Ferris students brought in a massive haul of food last night, the fruits of their annual Trojan Food Drive. How much? Just over 11,300 pounds – about five tonnes of non-perishables – were donated by the fine folks of West Ferris.
“It’s a fantastic event,” emphasized Mark Robertson, one of the many West Ferris teachers who help to organize the event. “There’s over 100 students and around 40 staff volunteers” who together take to the streets of West Ferris on about 35 different routes.
Some volunteers hold down the fort at the school, sorting the food as the drop-offs come in. The work is made lighter by many hands, “and it’s a really great vibe, and the kids have a lot of fun doing it,” Robertson said.
See: The Trojans are coming for your food
He noted how supportive the community is of this annual food drive – year 18 is next – and as time goes on, neighbours are becoming more aware of this good cause. “The majority of the homes are donating,” Robertson said, “and we literally hit every home in the whole Ferris area.”
“That’s where the food is coming from,” Robertson continued, “it’s the generosity of the community.”
