An unusual story from our police files today. An Elliot Lake man called the OPP requesting a ride and was then arrested on outstanding warrants, and while in custody more charges were added.

On October 1 the East Algoma OPP responded to a call in Elliot Lake and when they arrived at 8 p.m., officers were met by a man who was requesting a ride to southern Ontario.

The accused was later taken to Blind River detachment and held for bail court.

"While in custody the accused took a blanket and shoved it down a toilet then urinated on the floor," says Constable Bev Gauthier. "The accused continually spat at staff, urinated on the floor and threw food all over the cell walls."

Police say the next day East Algoma's Special Constable visited the cell area and was spat on in the face.

Stephen Lawrence, 41, from Elliot Lake is charged with:

  • Mischief - destroys or damages property
  • Assaulting a peace officer
  • Fail to attend court after having appeared
  • Fail to comply with an appearance notice

Lawrence appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice-Bail Court in Blind River on October 2 and was remanded into custody.
