City police say an ice hut off Sunset Park on Lake Nipissing was the target of thieves recently.

Police got the complaint yesterday that fishing equipment and other miscellaneous items were stolen.

If you have information call the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555. Constable Boucher is the investigating officer.

It's actually a pretty common occurrence. At this time last year, OPP warned of break-ins at several huts in Callander Bay

The previous year the number of stolen items, included a 19" Toshiba flat-screen TV, a Coleman stove, a Hummingbird Fish Finder, a 10" gas-powered ice auger, 10 fishing rods and a tackle box containing fish tackles.

Police have had some success in solving the cases. In 2010 North Bay OPP charged several people involved in the break, enters and theft as well as arson to ice shacks on Lake Nipissing. At that time a homemade wood stove had been removed. A 17-year-old male and a 25 year old male both of North Bay were charged with break and enter.

That same winter, seven ice shacks were vandalized and deliberately set on fire on Lake Nipissing near the government dock area. The investigation into this incident resulted in charges to four people.

North Bay Police remind the ice fishing community that

  • When you are leaving your shack wherever it is located take your valuables with you.
  • If you have to leave a valuable behind take the time to put it out of sight. Often thefts of this type are crimes of opportunity so if it is not visible it may get passed over.
  • Whether it’s your home or an ice shack community, know your neighbours so you can look out for each other to protect your neighbourhood.
