Laboratory-confirmed influenza has been reported across the district, including an institutional outbreak of Influenza B, says Leeann Whitney, Director of Infectious Diseases for the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit. There continues to be influenza activity in several areas of the province with the majority of cases in central Ontario.

“We encourage anyone with symptoms to stay home and avoid contact with highly vulnerable people such as the elderly, young children, anyone with high-risk medical conditions or who have compromised immune systems,” said Whitney. “The best way to prevent the spread of influenza is to get your influenza immunization and wash your hands.”

The health unit advises you can still get your influenza immunization. While it takes up to two weeks to gain full protection from the influenza immunization, it is not too late since the influenza season continues through the winter months. Call your health care provider to book an appointment. You can also call the Vaccine Preventable Diseases Program at the health unit, now open through the lunch hour, at 474-1400, ext. 2252 or 1-800-563-2808.

For more information, visit the Health Unit’s web site at www.healthunit.biz or call 474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808.
