Teen charged with attempt to harm pet, threat against own family

The 17-year-old accused is facing multiple charges, including 'assault causing bodily harm by choking, suffocating or strangling' and 'killing or injuring animals'

Police arrested and charged a young person after a request was made for police to assist in a family situation.

On June 3, 2024, shortly after 4 p.m., members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a residence on Alain Street in West Nipissing to assist with keeping the peace during a family dispute.

Police had received information earlier that day that a young person had assaulted and uttered a threat to another family member and then attempted to harm the family pet. The OPP will not be releasing the name of the accused under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old from that residence was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault
  • Assault cause bodily harm - choke, suffocate or strangle
  • Uttering threats - damage or injure animal
  • Killing or injuring animals

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay in July.
