The North Bay OPP and the OPP North East Region Traffic and Marine units are monitoring motorists on a section of the North Bay bypass between the Highway 17 off-ramp and Seymour Street.

This common yet illegal and dangerous driving manoeuvre, poses a risk to drivers making the right merge onto Seymour Street because they are not expecting to be overtaken by vehicles driving illegally on the shoulder of the highway.

On Wednesday morning (September 5th, 2007), in a very short time period, the Traffic and Marine Unit charged 8 motorists, which included a driver of a tractor trailer. They were charged with ‘pass off roadway’.

Other than being charged with ‘pass off roadway’, motorists can be charged with ‘fail to drive in the marked lane’ and ‘pass on right not in safety’. All three moving violations will cost the driver $110.00 and 3 demerit points.

OPP caution motorists not to drive on the shoulder of the highway, remain in the marked lanes and most importantly to be patient.
