North Bay is taking precautionary measures at its sewage plant as Lake Nipissing water levels continue to rise.

Significant rainfall is expected again today.

"Because rising lake levels could pose operational challenges at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, pumping equipment and temporary piping has been brought in as part of a contingency plan," says Gord Young, Communications Officer. "Treated effluent will be pumped from the plant’s chlorine contact chamber if conditions warrant."

The piping will run across Memorial Drive and the Kate Pace Way, which have been closed to traffic between Monk and Regina streets for an undetermined period

See: Memorial Drive closed.

Pumping could occur this afternoon, should the area receive the 30 to 50 millimeters of rain that’s forecast.

In addition, a lift station bypass plan has been established to provide system relief where possible in order to limit flow to the Wastewater Treatment Plant if required.

Young says no untreated sewage will be pumped directly into Lake Nipissing from the plant.
