Christine Hummel started a unique community event in the town of Powassan.

"In December 2019 I was cleaning out my Christmas closet and I had an overabundance of ornaments and I decided I should donate them," she said.

"Then I thought about it and figured I was going to decorate some random tree and put a picture of it on social media and just encourage people to continue decorating."

Hummel found a tree and picked a location near Clark Street in Powassan and the OPP Station so the Powassan Community Christmas Tree was born.

"People passing by on the highway can see it and anybody coming in and out of Powassan can see it," she said.

"It is just in a great location."

She says the tree which started with only 36 ornaments has grown to as many as 450.

However, Hummel became ill and she was unable to get the tree up and decorated in November so some members of the community got concerned.

Doug Thompson, the president of Powassan Minor Hockey, and Powassan resident was part of a handful of volunteers who decided to step up on the weekend to make sure the 5th Annual Powassan Community Christmas Tree event would continue.

"I knew she could not do it this year so I asked her if it was okay if I got a bunch of volunteers to go out and do it," said Thompson.

"She was in tears, she was super happy."

Fitzgerald Roofing provided ladders and snacks for the volunteers while members of several local hockey teams including the Powassan Voodoos chipped in to decorate the community tree.

"I have taken ill this year and Doug Thompson and a group of volunteers went down and worked on it on my behalf and the turnout was phenomenal," said Hummel.

"We got an amazing response, I went down and got some pictures. What I saw that afternoon really warmed my heart to know that I am part of this incredible community with all these incredible people who will go above and beyond to help you out."

Hummel hopes the community spirit continues to shine through during the Christmas season.

"We encourage people if they needed some ornaments to please help themselves," she said.

"Over the years people have put toys in zip locks and put them under the tree and people have helped themselves to that."
