Orientation days offered for the Near North School Board

As we begin 2009, the Near North District School Board encourages parents in our communities to begin to consider their child’s education options for September. Establishing an early relationship with your child’s future school community helps to create an easier transition for both parents and students.

Parents are encouraged to contact their local Near North school to arrange for a visit or to register. In May, elementary schools will be holding “Welcome to Kindergarten” orientation evenings where families will have an opportunity to connect with kindergarten teachers, resource staff and community support agencies and will receive activity bags full of supplies and useful information to help prepare children for their first learning experience in school.

The Near North District School Board operates an Early French Immersion program at three elementary schools in North Bay: Laurentian Public School, Pinewood Public School and Sunset Park Public School. Our program is specifically designed for children whose first language is not French and entry into the program can be at the Junior or Kindergarten level. Parents and students will have an opportunity to learn more about the Near North District School Board’s Early French Immersion Program on Monday, January 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Laurentian Public School.

Each of our seven secondary schools will be hosting orientation days for students, in addition to parent and student evening information sessions for grades 7 and 8. Parents and students are encouraged to learn about the innovative and diverse secondary program opportunities offered at Near North secondary schools. The following schedule outlines parent information sessions at our schools:

West Ferris Secondary School
Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium

Widdifield Secondary School
Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Theatre

Parry Sound High School
Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria

Northern Secondary School
Thursday, February 19 at 6:30 p.m. (Dinner is at 5:30 p.m.)

F.J. McElligott Secondary School
Wednesday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m. Room to be announced.

Almaguin Highlands Secondary School
Thursday, February 26 at 6:30p.m. in the Highlander Room.

Chippewa Secondary School
Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library
