South African mining giant, Impala Canada with its palladium mine north of Thunder Bay, is coming to North Bay looking for employees.

Company representatives will be in North Bay Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Homewoood Suites.

It already employs over 700 workers. It is ramping up production to become one of Canada’s largest underground mines, producing a metal that contributes to a cleaner global environment.

For more than 25 years, Impala has been producing palladium at its remote Lac des Isles mine, which features a unique, world-class ore body with modern infrastructure, including both an underground mine and surface operations.

The company says demand for palladium is expected to continue based on the worldwide SUV and hybrid vehicle market, the lack of substitutes for catalytic converters, and higher emission standards.

Most of Impala's 700 Canadian mining jobs are at the company's northern Ontario site.

The palladium mine is accessible by road 90 minutes northwest of Thunder Bay. It offers operational employment opportunities with various shift plans ranging from 14 days on, 14 days off to 4:3 and 7:7.

All roles at the mine are on a rotational schedule.

Communications Manager Emily Robb said, "We are expanding our operation to increase our mining capacity to 12,000 tonnes a day and so are hiring all types of roles to support this growth."

They include everything from underground miners to management.

"In particular we are hiring for a number of skilled trade roles including trades, heavy-duty mechanics and experienced mill operators and miners," she went on.

There's a full listing of current openings, with hourly wages, at the company website.

The Impala Roadshow communities were selected for factors including driving proximity to the mine site, location within northern Ontario and expressed interest from the communities themselves.

The Impala Roadshow will be in Elliott Lake at the Hampton Inn from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday.

Interviews will be done on-site.
