Nipissing University is pleased to announce that Dr. Craig Cooper has been appointed as dean of the faculty of arts and science. He will commence his five-year term as dean on July 1, 2008.

“The Nipissing University community is delighted to welcome Dr. Cooper to our campus,” said Dr. Peter Ricketts, vice-president, academic and research. “This is an exciting time for the university and for the faculty of arts and science. Dr. Cooper has extensive knowledge and experience in academic administration, research and teaching. Combined with his creativity and engaging personality, these will be significant assets as Nipissing continues to evolve, building on our innovative academic programming and student-centred environment.”

Cooper comes to Nipissing from the University of Winnipeg, where he is currently the associate dean of arts, and a professor of Classics. His previous positions include chair of Classics and acting chair of Philosophy. Cooper graduated with a doctorate degree and a master’s degree from the University of British Columbia, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta. He has been working at the University of Winnipeg since 1993.

Cooper’s research interests include Athenian Law, Athenian Orators and Greek Rhetoric, Greek Historiography, and Ancient Biography. He has written, edited and contributed to a number of peer reviewed academic books and journals; and has presented his research at conferences around the world, from Calgary to Crete.

"I am excited about coming to Nipissing and working closely with faculty, staff and students to further enhance the university’s growing reputation for teaching and research, and making Nipissing the university of choice for students seeking an innovative and personalized post-secondary education,” said Cooper.
