'This is the first time this many outdoor rinks are available and open this early even with the latest thaw'

The recent cold spell has been good news for all of North Bay's area outdoor rinks.

The cold has helped the city crews get a majority of the rinks primed for skating and ice hockey. Rinks at Birchaven, Bourke Playground, Graniteville, Greenhill, Kinette, Caldwell Ellam, Police Playground, Riverbend and West Ferris Lions Park area all open and reported in good condition on Christmas Eve.

The only rink not open is Circle Lake.

Mayor Al McDonald even went to social media to praise staff and local volunteers for getting the rinks going.

"This is the first time this many outdoor rinks are available and open this early even with the latest thaw," McDonald stated on social media.

"Well done everyone. Please enjoy with family/friends and enjoy all the city has to offer over the Christmas break."

While the rinks are open, the buildings will not be open to the public until January 2nd at the five locations where city rink attendants will be staffed.
