Every year the ‘Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council’ partners with Ontario Teachers and local fire departments to launch a fire safety campaign entitled ‘Keeping Our Kids Safe.’ It consists of curriculum approved lesson plans focusing on preventing injuries.

“This is a great opportunity for fire departments to work closer with teachers to educate children about injury prevention and safety information,” said Sheri Korn, Public Education/Fire Prevention Officer. Children are great ‘educators’ for us. We teach them about fire safety and they in turn bring those messages home to their parents. For example, reminding adults to test their smoke alarms monthly and to plan and practice a home fire safety plan.

To encourage teachers to participate, the Council holds a competition every year, providing prizes to teachers who have taught the safety lessons in their classrooms.
Susan Porter, a teacher at King George Public School did just that. She taught her JK class a lesson on fire safety and submitted her ‘lesson taught’ and as a result, her class will be enjoying a ‘pizza lunch’ compliments of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.
Every time a safety lesson is taught, teachers can submit a "Lesson Taught!" form to enter a draw for prizes. Prizes include a trip for two to Florida, a weekend getaway to Toronto, and class pizza parties.
