Optimistic golfers are saying,”better late than never.”
A number of local golf courses in the area are set to open this week, with Osprey Links in Callander opening on Wednesday, Highview in Powassan opening this Friday, while Pinewood Golf Course is expected to open this week as well.
Jeff Rogerson, Osprey Links General Manager and Club Pro, says they are opening all 18 holes with no carts yet.
Rogerson says this is definitely one of the latest starts in recent history.
“We have to be honest with everyone, everything seems it is about a month behind, so we are kind of looking at 1st of May or early April conditions for the middle of May but it is coming fast, it is improving every day,” said Rogerson noting that there was still frost in the ground earlier this week.
“We have had obstacles, but they are natural obstacles and we just have to work our way around them,” he added.
Rogerson is hoping that May and June are solid months because while the opening was much earlier in 2017, those two months were miserable for golf last year.
Meantime, Dean Harrington at Highview says things are coming together at his Powassan golf course.
"The course is drying up nicely and the greens wintered well," he said.
