Huntsville declares state of emergency

'Property owners in low-lying areas will need to take precautionary measures to protect their property'

Heavy rain is expected over over the next two days, and that has prompted the Town of Huntsville to declare a "State of Emergency."

Total rainfall amounts of 25 to 40 millimetres are expected by late Friday night with local amounts possibly exceeding 50 mm.

That will add a significant amount of water to already flooded streets.

"By declaring this, staff will have access to the additional and necessary resources if in fact, we receive the predicted rainfall amounts that will impact high water levels," according to the Town's website.

"As of April 25 at 12 p.m, Huntsville lakes continue to rise at a slower rate. Water levels in the Big East River are slowly lowering and we continue to see rising waters and flooded roads south of Brunel Locks and throughout the Port Sydney area. Property owners in low-lying areas will need to take precautionary measures to protect their property."

Residents are encouraged to monitor media outlets, the MNRF and the Town of Huntsville website for updates

Additional information from the town is expected later this afternoon.
