News Release

Canadore College Aviation students are attending an information session today about unique opportunities with the Canadian Forces, including their subsidized education program.

CF Military Career Counsellor, Captain Tony Turco, along with two Aviation Technicians will be visiting Canadore's Aviation Campus on September 12 in order to inform Canadore students about academic and career possibilities within the CF, including the Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Education Program (NCMSEP).

Within the program students have the opportunity to have their tuition, books, and tools paid for, and in addition will receive approximately $30,000/year salary. The students attend basic training during the summer and then are provided employment with the CF for three years after graduation to fulfill their obligatory service.

Canadore is one of a select few institutions in Canada that meet the requirements for this program.

Canadore was chosen because its curriculum meets the military's requirements and its programs have received Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council accreditation.

Capt. Turco will be speaking with students from the Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance, Aviation Technician - Avionics Maintenance and Aviation Structural Repair Technician programs. Currently, there are 18
positions in Aircraft Technician, 18 in Avionics and 1 in Structural Repair available nationally. Selection is scheduled to take place in October 2007.

In 2004, Canadore students comprised approximately 60 per cent of the national intake for the Avionics technician occupation within the NCMSEP and the CF added 12 students to the College's program enrolment numbers.

Turco said there are a number of programs at Canadore that meet the CF requirements and although they may not be subsidized, there is a Reserve Educational Reimbursement Program for which students may be eligible. Programs such as Police Foundations and Community Justice Services meet
the requirements, Turco said.

There is also one position available nationally for which students from the Culinary Skills - Chef program at Canadore can apply.
