Hiking up the fundraising for Nipissing Serenity Hospice

Hospice expected to open in the fall

For the fourth year, Cathy Hogan and her team are embarking on a fundraising mission to raise funds for the Nipissing Serenity Hospice.

Their team name is the “Dixie's Chicks” in honour of Cathy’s sister-in-law Dixie who passed away more than four years ago.

The Dixie's Chicks have raised about $16,000 towards the Nipissing Serenity Hospice through the Hike for Hospice which was launched today just outside the construction zone of the new hospice which is expected to open by the fall at the location near John Street in North Bay.

Cathy Hogan believes a hospice would have been something Dixie would have appreciated.

“I think we would have been happy if she would have had an option, some people will choose a hospice, some people may not but to have the option to be able to spend the last part of your life in a home-like setting and have space for your family, gardens to look at, I think it would have been really special for her,” said Hogan.

Mathilde Bazinet, is the Chair of the Nipissing Serenity Hospice. She is optimistic this year’s hike will raise about $100,000, which is enough funds to pay for a palliative care room in the new hospice.

“We are very optimistic that it will happen this year because now the building is going up and people are seeing that it is really happening,” she said.

The cause got an early boost as RBC handed over a cheque for $5,000 to start the hike off on the right foot.  The hike itself will take place on May 5th.
