Hepatitis C is curable and that’s the message this month

'We have a cure that is basically 97 to 98 percent cure rate.  One pill, once a day for 12 weeks, it is very easy'

Keri McGuire-Trahan hopes with May being Hepatitis C Month in North Bay, that local residents realize that victims of the disease have help.

“The focus is getting the message out that we can now treat anyone that has chronic Hep C,” McGuire-Trahan told CKAT earlier this week.

“We have a cure that is basically 97 to 98 percent cure rate.  One pill, once a day for 12 weeks, it is very easy.”

The AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area, has marked May as Hepatitis C Awareness Month and will host several information events throughout the month.

Hepatitis C presentations will be delivered to community partners and awareness booths will be on display at various locations across the city to provide outreach and education.

“We are doing a variety of different kiosks in different locations and an open house at the end of May,” added McGuire-Trahan.

“Hep C is the only chronic disease we can cure.  We can’t cure diabetes, we can’t cure COPD, we can’t cure arthritis, we can cure Hep C,” she continued.

All past treatment restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care have been lifted.

Officials say this is a major step in terms of making treatment accessible to all those infected with the virus.

“It should be more front and centre in the news and in some ways that is a bit disappointing because it is a huge breakthrough,” she added.
