The 57th Annual North Bay Regional Science Fair was a huge success for the more than 150 participants who took part in this year’s competition held at Nipissing University Sports Complex.

More than 50 awards including scholarships, trophies, medals, plaques, certificates, and cheques were presented for the scientific initiatives of these brilliant students.

The highlight of the Awards ceremony was the designation of those who will represent the region at this year's Canada-Wide Science Fair being held in Fredericton, NB. May 11 to 17. Three projects (five students) were selected for this exciting opportunity.

Emily Mah and Jazlyn McGuinty of Widdifield Secondary School for their project “Using Tannin-Embedded Biopolymers to Extract Heavy Metals from Contaminated Water” which won the TransCanada Award, the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council Award - Intermediate or Senior, the Dr. J.M. Filion Environment Award, and a gold medal in the Senior Earth and Environment category;

Skye White and Ian McCormack of West Ferris for their project “Looking for Micro-plastic in Water with Nile Red” which won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority Science Award, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Earth and Environment category;

Hanna McDonald of St. Luke’s for her project “Bite Me” which won the Shulman Travel Award, and a gold medal in the Junior Life Science category.

In addition, the NSERC Young Innovators Travel Award was presented to each of the five finalists going to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

"It is very exciting to see the level of enthusiasm, and quality of projects participating in the Science Fair," stated Andrew Weeks, the Judge in Chief.

"The NBRSF Committee wish all these brilliant students continued success with their scientific endeavours.”

The NBRSF hope for greater regional school participation at future fairs and the realization of the immense value this educational event provides our youth.
