Catch of the day: A wallop of a walleye on Lake Nipissing

Emma Bertrand at first thought she had hooked a pike judging by the fight but she later pulled up a hefty-sized walleye from Lake Nipissing

Emma Bertrand of Sturgeon Falls loves to fish Lake Nipissing but she says she will always remember her latest catch and release.

On Friday, she hauled in a 31 1/4-inch walleye.

Bertrand says she was out on the lake with her parents and family friends when she felt a mighty tug on her line.

"At first we were thinking it may be a pike the way it was fighting hard and pulling," Bertrand says. "Once I got it up we took a quick photo and released her back to the water."

Bertrand's fish comes in just shy of the largest-ever walleye caught in Ontario — way back in 1943 — which measured 36.5".

"That's my dad standing next to me," she says. "He wanted to be a part of this special moment that we'll never forget."
