Monday afternoon over 150 students from Canadore College learned that their hard work can pay off early.

The students shared $45,000 awarded through private donors at the thirty-third annual scholarship awards ceremony.

“This is a day of great pride here at Canadore College,” Barb Taylor, president of the college said.

“I suspect there are a lot of proud parents here,”

Most of the scholarships are program-specific and the money is donated by local businesses. Student who receive scholarships must be nominated by a faculty member.

There are also 12 non-specific scholarships. Students who are First Nations members, have special needs or believe that they have shown exceptional academic achievement can apply for these scholarships.

Bill Elliot, president of the North Bay and District chamber of Commerce, was guest speaker.

“Bill Elliot walks the talk,” Taylor said.

“Some people retire, some people just keep on giving.”

Elliot explained the importance of education during his speech.

“Life is a learning experience,” Elliot said.

Elliot also told of Canadore College's importance to North Bay.

“The college generates millions of dollars into the community,” Elliot explained.

Canadore College is a member of the chamber, along with Nipissing University and 900 other organizations.

Erin Leiverse, president of the Canadore Student Representation Council, explained that students who receive these scholarships are the people "who make Canadore look right.”

Leiverse explained that extra money can be just as important to students as good grades.

“We all like free money.”
