At its Regular meeting held last night, Callander’s Municipal Council approved Operating and Capital budgets resulting in a zero percent tax increase to local ratepayers.

Total Operating Budget expenditures of some $4.18 Million and Capital Budget expenditures of some $4.68 Million were confirmed in Council’s deliberations. Along with these approvals and offsetting revenues, a 2008 Tax Levy of $2.763 Million was approved by By-law. Local Sewer and Water rates will also remain unchanged for 2008.

For a Callander home with a current assessed value of $150,000, a ratepayer paid approximately $1,800 in property taxes in 2007, with an average water and sewer bill of $326. The 2008 tax bill, allowing for assessment shifts, will total approximately $1,780 for the same home, with water and sewer charges remaining the same.

“We are confident that the residents and businesses of Callander will be pleased with the overall direction of this Budget”, commented Mayor Hector Lavigne. “We have endeavoured to keep costs in line while providing for the necessary services and projects Callander needs to move forward.”

The 2008 Budget process commenced in December of 2007 and was concluded with Council’s approval of Tax Rate, Tax Ratio and Tax Levy By-laws on April 15th.
