A record breaking NOSSA Track and Field meet for local athletes

The track and field event took place in North Bay on Wednesday and Thursday.

The north's top Track and Field high school athletes gathered in North Bay for the NOSSA track and field championships which took place Wednesday and Thursday at Cundari Field and at Chippewa Secondary School.

It was a record breaking NOSSA event for a pair of brothers from Chippewa Secondary School.

Chippewa's Heath Bradley and Sam Pannell from Algonquin broke NOSSA records with their throws in the NOSSA Discus finishing first and second in the senior event.

“Breaking the record was just a bonus to winning NOSSA," stated Heath Bradley.

"I was just happy to be able to accomplish my goal of winning in front of my mom and coach Brian Milne. My favourite part of the whole event was watching my mom read my final record breaking distance and hear the joy in her voice. I would like to give credit to both my mom and Brian (Milne) as well, without them I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Pannell also finished first in the senior shot put event.

Meantime, Raine Bradley, who won the 2024 Fergie Dowdall Trophy as the top athlete at the NDA Track and Field Championship, broke a long-standing NOSSA Novice discus record set by current Toronto Argonauts lineman and Algonquin alum Ryan Hunter.

"It was so nerve-wracking and exciting standing in the ring waiting for my disc to land," said Raine.

"I didn’t  know whether it would land in or out and it felt like forever standing there. When i heard the distance (50.20m)of the throw after seeing it land inbound i was stunned realizing i broke the record and by quite a lot. i’m so happy to have broken the record but i wouldn’t have been able to do it without my coach Brian Milne and my mom helping me all the way."

Multi-sport Scollard Hall athlete Chloe Popp qualified for OFSAA with a first place finish in pole vault, second in the 800 meter run and second with Scollard Hall's 4 x 400 meter relay team.

West Ferris' Taryn Wozney qualified in three events including second in 200 meter dash, third in 100 meter hurdles, and second with West Ferris in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
