To the editor:
As a Christian and a member of the North Bay community, I feel deeply called to speak out on behalf of our homeless brothers & sisters, especially as the cold weather poses a life-threatening danger to those without shelter.
Proverbs 19:17 reminds us, "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord." This is a call not only for individual compassion but also for collective action, especially from our government officials.
The reality of homelessness in North Bay is heartbreaking. Many individuals who seek refuge in tents or encampments are repeatedly displaced, with their possessions often discarded. These sweeps may make public spaces look cleaner, but they fail to address the underlying issues, instead deepening the despair of those affected.
As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors in tangible ways, particularly in times of crisis. While short-term charity—like providing meals, warm clothing, or blankets—is essential, we must also advocate for systemic solutions that respect the dignity of every person.
Our city leadership can and must do more to address homelessness, particularly during the harsh winter months:
1. Open More Warming Centres: Increase warming centre capacity throughout the city where people have access to warmth and food.
2. Designate Safe Encampment Areas: Instead of displacing people, provide sanctioned spaces where individuals can live safely with access to basic sanitation and services.
3. Strengthen Mental Health and Addiction Services: Many who experience homelessness face challenges that require access to affordable, comprehensive care.
4. Engage with the Homeless Community: Policies should be informed by the voices of those directly affected.
Matthew 25:40 reminds us of Christ’s words: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Every action we take—or fail to take—toward addressing homelessness reflects our values and faith.
I urge our government officials and residents alike to work toward compassionate, sustainable solutions. By coming together, we can transform North Bay into a place where no one is left behind, especially during the coldest and most vulnerable times of the year.
Yours sincerely,
Trevor Oscar
