It seems to happen every winter. It's cold so people leave their cars running unattended and an opportunist steals it.

That's what happened last week in North Bay when the North Bay Police Service arrested and charged a 43-year-old man.

Police say at 11:30 p.m. on November 25 the victim entered a business on Main Street East and left his vehicle running outside. While the vehicle was unattended, a man got in and drove off.

Police located the thief at 2:30 a.m. on November 26 at a hotel on Seymour Street, where he was arrested.

The accused and victim are not known to one another.

Kevin Jamieson, 43, of North Bay, is charged with:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Fail to comply with a probation order

Jamieson was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.

Police advise that If you want to warm up your vehicle and can’t do it remotely, stay inside the vehicle. If you are running quick errands, shut off your vehicle and take the keys with you.
