Pedestrian struck by pickup on Algonquin Avenue

It is confirmed one individual suffered serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in the southbound lanes of Algonquin Avenue, between Elmwood Avenue and Greenwood Avenue on Friday evening

Details are few as police complete their investigation late Friday evening into a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

It is confirmed one individual suffered serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in the southbound lanes of Algonquin Avenue, between Elmwood Avenue and Greenwood Avenue.

The collision happened at approximately 7:15 p.m. The injured pedestrian was transported to the hospital by paramedics. No update on their condition was available as of early Saturday morning.

Algonquin Avenue was completely closed in the aftermath of the incident. At 11 p.m., the southbound lanes remained closed to through traffic, blocked by North Bay Police Service vehicles. One OPP vehicle remained on the scene as the officers worked together to investigate.

The collision occurred near a transit shelter in front of the medical building at 1221 Algonquin Ave.In years past, this section of the busy road became a point of contention after pedestrians were killed or injured while crossing against traffic. The City of North Bay looked into the demand from the public for a pedestrian crossing across Algonquin but opted not to proceed as the crossing was deemed inappropriate for that area, partly because it is so close to the existing traffic lights at Algonquin, intersected by Lansdowne Avenue and Norwood Avenue.
