Man flees cops, now faces 24 charges including kidnapping

A chance meeting in a North Bay bar between four people led to a police chase down to Huntsville and the arrest of a local man and woman charged with multiple dangerous driving and weapon offences.

Police say on September 20, two victims were in a local bar and met with two others.

"After the two victims left the bar, they received threatening phone calls," says a police news release.

The two callers stated they would be going to the victims’ homes. Police tried to stop their vehicle, but they fled. 

"Police pursued the vehicle to the Muskoka area and, with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police’s Emergency Response Team and Canine unit, arrested the two accused in the area of Huntsville," states the release.

Upon the arrest of the man, warrants relating to an unrelated investigation were also executed.

On September 4 at 4 p.m. a man was seen driving in a dangerous manner in the area of McNamara Street. Later that same day, he was involved in an argument with a male victim in the area of Kinsmen Beach and tried to run the victim over with his vehicle.

He then exited his vehicle, assaulted and threatened the victim, then fled the scene.  

Rodrigo Martinez, male, age 25, of North Bay is charged with:

  • Four counts of uttering threats
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order
  • Pointing a firearm
  • The occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Knowledge of the unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Kidnapping while using certain firearms
  • Two counts of flight from a peace officer
  • Firearm – use while committing an offence
  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Four counts of failing to comply with a probation order
  • Four counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Assault causing bodily harm

A 24-year-old woman from North Bay is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from a peace officer

As part of the investigation, the North Bay Police Service says it will not be releasing the name of the 24-year-old female accused.

The two accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.
