The North Bay Major Bantam AAA Savignac Trappers competed in the Peterborough Boston Pizza Ice Fest this past weekend. After a strong start in the round robin portion, winning all 4 games, the team faced the Clarington Toro's in the playoffs.
The Trappers had beaten the Toro's in the round robin, took control of the game early, and then proceeded to squander a 2-0 lead in the second period.
Sloppy play and a lacklustre effort saw them give up the next 3 goals.
Too many penalties in the third doused any hope of a comeback.
The Toro's went on the pot 2 empty net goals, for a final score of 5-2. It was not the finish the team had in mind after a terrific start. The goaltending duo of Reece Proulx and Ben Gaudreau were fantastic all weekend.
The coaching staff is very pleased with the progress of the team so far, but of course realize that we have lots of work to do.
The Savignac Trappers host their first home games of the season this weekend vs the much improved Soo Thunder, Saturday night at 4 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. - both games in Powassan.
Major Peewee
The Atlas Copco major peewee Trappers were swept by the first place Soo Greyhounds this past weekend. In the first game the Trappers lost a tight 3-1 decision and likely deserved a better result however, failure to capitalize on their many scoring chances ultimately hurt them.
Nico Laforge scored the lone goal with Chase Lefebvre and Brett Richardson assisting. Caleb Sanders provided strong goaltending between the pipes. In game 2 the Trappers suffered a 4-2 loss in a very entertaining game. Caelan McAuliffe had a solid game in net for the Trappers.
Goals for the Trappers were provided by Richardson and Laforge. In the final game Sunday the Trappers suffered a major meltdown in the third period as the Greyhounds scored seven unanswered goals on route to a 10-1 victory.
Lefebvre, with a beautiful goal, assisted by Anden Ringuette registered the lone Trapper tally.
Despite the lopsided third period on Sunday, the coaches commended the players effort in all three games and noted that with continued hard work and focus in practice better results are in their future.
