Sudbury, get ready for Madwewetoon!
Madwewetoon, which translates to “make it sound” in Ojibwe, is a celebration of Indigenous arts and culture in Northern Ontario. It’s coming to Sudbury for one night only, Thursday March 13 at The Grand.
Headlining this unique festival is none other than three-time JUNO-award winning singer, Tom Wilson, with his band TEHOHÀHAKE TRIO. Wilson is a Canadian rock musician who is a veteran of the Canadian music scene. Wilson did not find out he was adopted until he was an adult, when he discovered his birth father was a member of the Mohawk tribe. This led him on a journey to find his roots, write a book, and eventually, to his Mohawk name and the birth of TEHOHÀHAKE TRIO.
Also appearing on this phenomenal night of music, Mohawk rocker and JUNO-nominated folk and soul musician, Logan Staats; contemporary roots singer-songwriter and 2024 Ontario Folk Music Awards Performing Artist of the Year nominee, Mimi O’Bonsawin; and local artist, Thea May, from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, who recently signed to Ishkode Records.
Rounding out the March 13 lineup is Toronto-based duo, Wampums, who will serve as event host and opening act.
“We are absolutely thrilled to present this phenomenal lineup of talent at Madwewetoon,” said an event spokesperson. “Madwewetoon is a collaboration between The Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) and Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI).”
They added, “The two organizations previously joined forces to successfully produce Ottawa’s Minoshkite Indigenous Music & Arts Festival in 2024.”
Because of this collaboration, tickets to Madwewetoon are pay what you can. “We want to make sure that everyone who wants to come and enjoy this wonderful event, are able to,” said the spokesperson. “There are no barriers to enjoying this marvelous show.”

The event spokesperson finished, “Over the last two years, we've presented a version of this festival in Ottawa called Minoshkite. The response was so overwhelming that we wanted to bring the same concept to Northern Ontario, and Sudbury is the perfect place for it! We can’t wait to welcome everyone to this wonderful event!”
