Coming off a tough overtime loss Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team was right back at it Saturday.

The Lakers welcomed the Brock Badgers to town, as Nipissing looked to get back in the win column right away.

Not to be denied two nights in a row, the Lakers came away with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Badgers.

It wasn’t the start the Lakers were hoping for, as the Badgers struck early to go up 1-0 at the 7:57 mark of the opening period.

The Badgers goal was the only one through 20 minutes, as the Lakers trailed after one.

In the middle frame, the Lakers tied things up as the program’s all-time leading goal scorer, Malory Dominico buried her 13th goal of the season, making it 1-1.

The goal, which came at the 13:34 mark, was assisted by Maggie McKee and Katie Chomiak.

With the Badgers scoring in the first and the Lakers replying in the second, the teams went to the second intermission tied up at 1-1.

The third period solved nothing, as the game went into overtime – the second straight game for the Lakers.

This time, the Lakers were able to find a way to grab the win, thanks to a Chomiak game-winner.

Local product Madison Desmerais set up Chomiak for the winner.

The goal came on the 43rd shot for Nipissing.

Chantelle Sandquist earned the win, turning aside 13 shots.

With the win the Lakers move to 19-3-0-1 on the season as they sit in first in the OUA East.

Next up, the Lakers and York Lions play a second home-and-home set of the season, as the Lakers hit the road Friday and play their final home game of the regular season Saturday night.

Lakers face Bold weekend sweep

With a lot to play for in the final few games of the regular season, the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team was looking to bounce back after a tough loss Friday night against the same opponent; TMU Bold.

However, for the second night in a row, it was the Bold that came away with victory in a 4-3 decision during Military Appreciation night.

In the opening 20 minutes, former Battalion forward Harrison Caines struck, scoring his 14th of the season to put Nipissing up 1-0, with local product Payton Vescio grabbing an assist on the game’s opening goal.

The power play marker came just past the midway point of the period, but before the teams could head to the dressing room for the intermission, the Bold tied things up.

TMU followed up their tying goal with a quick go-ahead marker, scoring just 55 seconds later to go up 2-1.

They continued their late onslaught, scoring a third straight to go up 3-1 before the end of the first period.

The Bold made it 4-1 just over five minutes into the middle frame before the Lakers finally responded.

Down three, Kyle Foreman scored his seventh of the year to cut Nipissing’s deficit in half.

Matthieu Franche and Charles Farmer set up Foreman, who scored Friday night as well.

Caines buried his second of the game to pull the Lakers within one, scoring another power play marker just past the midway point of the period.

Thanks to a pair of goals in the latter half of the period, the Lakers ended 40 minutes down just a goal.

A scoreless third saw the Lakers come up a goal short to cap off the weekend.

Reece Proulx was between the pipes for the Lakers, making 20 saves, while Nipissing had 21 shots of their own.

The loss, which is now the Lakers fourth straight, drops their record to 10-10-2-3 on the season.

Nipissing will remain at home for two more games, hosting the Brock Badgers next weekend.
