Depth scoring has been a key all season for the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey and it showed Saturday afternoon.

Jetta Derenoski scored twice and added an assist, while Kaley Tienhaara had a goal and two assists to lead the Lakers to a 4-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers.  Windsor opened up the scoring with the lone goal of the first period and took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.

From there, it was all Derenoski, Tienhaara and the Lakers.

Derenoski tied the game early in the second period, set up by Katelyn Heppner and Tienhaara.

Heppner finished with a pair of points as well.

With the scored tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, the Lakers scored three times in the third to come away with the win.

Tienhaara scored just over a minute in, set up by Heppner and Derenoski.

Then Derenoski potted her second of the night, setup by none other than Tienhaara, as the two finished with three points each.

Marilyn Fortin sealed the win with an empty-netter, assisted by Zosia Davis

In net, Mercedes Chircop made 21 saves for the win as she continues her solid season.

Nipissing faces Western in London Sunday at 2:30pm to wrap up the first road trip of 2019.

Lakers men fall to Gaels

An early winning 2019 winning streak came to an end Saturday night as the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey dropped a decision to the Queens Gaels.

Nipissing led 1-0, but came up short, losing 4-1 in the end to the Gaels.

After a scoreless first period, Brock Morrison got Nipissing on the board scoring just before the midway point of the middle frame.

Brett Jeffries picked up the lone helper on the goal.

Unfortunately that was the only goal the team would score.

Queens tied the game before the end of the period, sending the teams to the intermission even at one.

In the third, the Gaels scored twice in under a minute and sealed the game just after the midway mark of the final frame to make it 4-1.

Nipissing wasn’t able to mount a comeback, losing by three.

Domenic Graham was handed the loss despite making 31 saves.

The Lakers are on the road to face UOIT and Carleton next weekend.

Lakers men's basketball team humbled by Ravens

Matched up against the top team in the OUA and USports, the Nipissing Lakers hung in there, but were unable to pull off the upset.

A slow start hurt Nipissing and despite a much better second quarter, the damage was done and the deficit was too large to comeback from, as Carleton won 107-59.

A tough start set the Lakers back, as they trailed 30-8 after the first quarter of play.

A much improved second saw Nipissing post 26 points, edging Carleton by two and cutting into their deficit, but it was still a 54-34 disadvantage.

The third quarter sealed the game for the Ravens, as they extended their lead by 14 and took a 79-45 lead into the fourth.

Carleton put the game away in the fourth and cruised to the victory to stay undefeated.

Nipissing put up a valiant fight, but it wasn’t enough.

Justin Hill was the lone Lakers player to hit double digits, putting up 27 points in tonight's matchup with the Ravens.

Nipissing heads on the road next weekend when they face Toronto and Ryerson in Toronto.

Lakers women fall to Ravens

It was a real test for the Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball this weekend, as they hosted Ottawa and Carleton.

After a loss Friday night, the Lakers looked to rebound against one of the OUA’s top teams and while they came up short, they hung in there with a very strong, skilled Ravens team.

Nipissing fell 68-40 in the end, but it was only a few tough minutes that hurt them.

The Lakers, in fact, led 11-10 after the opening quarter and were off to a very strong start at both ends of the court.

Carleton bounced back in a big way, outscoring Nipissing 24-10 in the second quarter and took a 34-21 lead into the halftime break.

Another solid period by the Lakers saw them even with the Ravens, 11-11, but they were not able to cut into their deficit.

With the game still within reach, Nipissing struggled in the fourth, putting up just eight points, as Carleton ran away with the game and sealed the win.

The Ravens scored 23 points in the final quarter, extending their 13 point advantage into a 28 point victory.

Angeline Campbell led the Lakers attack with 14 points, while Devanee Dewey chipped in with 10 versus Carleton.

Nipissing heads on the road next weekend when they face Toronto and Ryerson in Toronto.
