Lakers men and women suffer losses

The Nipissing Lakers varsity women's hockey team dropped its first game of the new season on Saturday. 

While they fired 39 shots at the Windsor goalie, it was the Lancers who came away with the win, topping the Lakers 4-1 as both teams wrapped up their weekend.

In the opening period, Windsor struck first, going up 1-0 with 14:37 left in the thanks to a shot off the rush.

The early Lancers goal was the only one of the period, as they took a one-goal lead into the intermission.

Shots favoured the Lakers 14-7 through 20 minutes.

The Lancers doubled their lead early in the second as they capitalized on a power play and made it 2-0 just over five minutes into the middle frame.

With less than a minute to go, the Lakers finally broke through as veteran forward Ashley Taciuk found the back of the net go cut into the Lakers deficit.

The goal, with 50 seconds left, made it 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Shots favoured Windsor 23-22 after two.

A few chances be each team in the third was all the offence through 16 minutes of action.

Windsor would add an empty-net goal with 1:56left in the game to make it 3-1, despite late pressure from Nipissing.

The Lancers made it 4-1 with a second empty-net goal as the Lakers pushed to get back in the game, but came up short.

Next up, the Lakers hit the road and travel to Windsor and London, as they face the Lancers once again and the Western Mustangs.

Lakers men fall to 1-4-1

The Lakers men dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime against the Brock Badgers.

Holden Rogers netted the game winner for the Badgers 2:38 into the extra frame. 

Zach Roy made 35 saves in goal for the Lakers. 

Harrison Caines and Frank Jenkins scored for the Lakers in the loss.
