Former Battalion coach Butler under 'internal review' by Otters

'Due to an ongoing internal review of team policy, head coach Stan Butler will not be joining the team for its upcoming weekend road trip'

Longtime OHL head coach Stan Butler is under some scrutiny by his OHL club. 

The former North Bay Battalion coach will not be joining his team, the Erie Otters on its road trip due to an investigation by the organization. 

"Due to an ongoing internal review of team policy, head coach Stan Butler will not be joining the team for its upcoming weekend road trip," the Otters stated in a social media post on Thursday. 

Butler was hired by the Otters on Jan. 26, 2023. The Otters are fifth in the Western Conference with a 19-14-3 record and take on the Ottawa 67s in their next game on Jan. 17.

On Dec. 19, 2019, the North Bay Battalion announced the long-serving Butler had stepped down as head coach and director of hockey operations. 

Up to that point,  Butler had been head coach for 22 years going back to the franchise's origin with the expansion Brampton Battalion in 1998-99.

The 68-year-old spent time as a head coach, general manager and director of hockey operations at various points throughout his tenure.

The Toronto, Ont., native has also coached on the international stage in the past, representing Canada at the World Juniors at the 2001 and 2002 tournaments.
