It was a successful weekend for the North Bay U18 and U16 Trappers teams that compete in the Great North U18 Hockey League.
The North Bay U18 AAA Trappers snared a pair of home wins from the visiting Kapuskasing Flyers at Memorial Gardens over the weekend.
Ben Brunton led the way for the North Bay U18 AAA Trappers as he was named the U18 AAA Central Region Player of the Week due to his impressive seven goals and four assists for 11 points in two high scoring victories over the Flyers this weekend.
Brunton is running away with the Great North U18 scoring race with 69 points, leading his second place linemate Martin Brassard (45 pts.) by 24 points.
On Saturday the Trappers fell behind 5-3 in the second period but exploded in the third period with seven unanswered goals in a 10-5 win.
Brunton scored four times, while Tyler Brunet added a pair. Martin Brassard, Mathias Moar, Jackson Culin and Liam Starcevic scored in the win. Logan Coates, who came in relief for starter Owan Heroux was credited with the comeback win.
On Sunday, the Trappers continued to build on that third period momentum by defeating the Flyers 11-2. Brunton led the way with three goals, while Owen Head added a pair. Scott Szcygiel, Brassard, Colton Loiselle, Liam Starcevic, Tyler Brunet and Noah Kozmick scored for the Trappers.
Coates was solid in goal as he got the win between the pipes for the U18's.
The U18 Trappers sit comfortably on top of the Great North U18 standings with a 21-2-0-1 record and 12 points ahead of the second place Sudbury U18 AAA Wolves.
U16 Trappers prevail in the Soo
The U16 AAA Trappers came home with a pair of wins over the U18 and U16 AAA Greyhounds in the Soo over the weekend.
On Saturday Owen Smith scored with just over one minute left in overtime as the U16 Trappers edged the U18 Greyhounds 4-3.
Ty Dubreuil had a pair of goals including the equalizer in the third period to force overtime. Phillippe Lafontaine had the other Trappers goal in the win.
Bruce Laronde got the win in goal for the U16 Trappers.
On Sunday, Lafontaine had two goals and one assist as they defeated the U16 Greyhounds 6-2. Cedar Montreuil contributed one goal and two assists.
Affiliate Aiden Duchesne, Ty Dubreuil, and Janssen Fransen had the goals.
Graydon Joseph got the win in goal for the U16's.
The U16 Trappers wins improve their record to 10-12-0-1 as they sit in sixth spot in the tight Great North U18 standings.
