The Algonquin Barons junior football team took home the NDA championship with an upset win over the top seeded St.Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears Thursday night at Cundari Field.
The Barons won a back and forth affair by a score of 28-26.
The Barons got off to a quick start, going up 14-0 in the first quarter on a pass from quarterback Andrew Robillard to Nic Baldasaro, as well as a rushing touchdown from Hunter Periard.
The Bears scored twice to make it 14-13 before Ryan Nadeau was able to block the extra point attempt to keep the lead.
The Barons ended the half on an interception returned for a touchdown by Baldasaro, led by his teammates blocks downfield, to make the score 21-13 at the half.
The Bears started the second half with another score to make it 21-19 before cornerback Ryan Landry secured another pick six touchdown for the Barons, making it 28-19.
The Bears continued to throw the ball and were able to score again, making it 28-26 with lots of time remaining on the scoreboard.
The Barons were able to put together a drive late in the fourth quarter before a fumble by the offense gave the Bears hope for a comeback.
The comeback fell short on another Landry interception and was sealed with an interception by safety Nick Mondor on the last play to seal the win. Nic Baldasaro converted four extra points to round out the scoring for the Barons.
The Barons defense came up big, finishing with 8 interceptions on the night with two each for Baldasaro, Landry and Mondor, as well as singles by Dalton Marleau-Vautour and Hunter Périard, as well as solid contributions along the lines by Keyan Breault, Caleb Mclean and Jordan Kennedy.
