I’m in total agreement with Mr. Ferguson. We have to understand the geopolitical situation at the time. Millions of Ukrainian people died of starvation in the early 1930s at the hand of Russian rule. The German occupation of Ukraine was initially a welcomed relief from Russian oppression. Many young Ukrainian men volunteered for German military units after Germany was defeated at the battle of Stalingrad to fight against the advance of Russia, not to support the genocide of Jews, Poles, gipsys etc. I’m embarrassed as a Canadian that Mr. Pollieve used Mr. Hunka as a political pawn without researching the entire story. It points to Mr. Pollieve’s “hatred” for our government. Shame on him. There is no room for hatred in our political system. Remember, it was hatred driven politics that brought the Nazi party to power in Germany.

I am in total agreement with Mr. Ferguson. In addition, we must understand the geopolitical situation in Ukraine at the time. Many Ukrainians had suffered/died under rule of Russia prior to Germany occupying the Ukraine in WWII. Germany had just been defeated at the battle of Stalingrad. Young Ukrainian men like Mr. Hunka volunteered to fight against the Russians….not to support the genocide of Jews, Poles, gipsys etc. I’m embarrassed as a Canadian that Mr. Hunka was used as a political pawn. Shame on the Conservative Party and its leader.
