During Fire Prevention Week October running until the 12th, North Bay Fire & Emergency Services is emphasizing the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home to prevent fire-related fatalities.

They recommend installing smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas, testing them monthly, replacing batteries annually, and replacing alarms over 10 years old.

Practicing a home fire escape plan is also crucial and will save time during the evacuation.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley stresses that working smoke alarms provide early warning needed to escape fires safely, especially at night when most deadly fires occur.

North Bay Fire & Emergency Services is organizing a variety of events during Fire Prevention Week including 2 Fill-a-Fire Truck events where fire crews and the North Bay Food Bank are working together collecting donations of non-perishable food items, cash/gift card donations, and personal hygiene items.

Tuesday, October 8th from 10 am-6 pm, they will be at Sobeys 1899 Algonquin Ave and Wednesday October 9th from 10 am-6 pm, at Parker's Your Independent Grocer, 1 Laurentian Ave.

Throughout the month of October, Fire crews will also be attending schools in the North Bay area conducting fire drills with the students’ participation.
