News release: In honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the Canadore College community will gather and reflect on the effects of violence against women in today’s society Monday.
In 1991, the Parliament of Canada declared December 6 to be the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in honour of the 14 women killed in a gender-based act of violence at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal.
“Today, one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence,” said George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College. “We all have a role to play in increasing knowledge and awareness, implementing preventing measures, violence against women and girls, as well as advocating, creating safe and supportive environments. The time is now.”
Burton is joined by City of North Bay Mayor Al McDonald, and Canadore Students’ Council Vice-President Phoenix McCoy, and a host of students from the College as they create a banner of personal expressions addressing the importance of putting an end to female gender-based violence.
