COBS Bakery in North Bay and its customers have raised $6,300 for Nipissing Serenity Hospice in aid of residential palliative care.
The contribution's size placed the bakery sixth among 56 COBS Bread locations across Ontario for the highest donation amount and sixth in Canada out of 160 nationwide.
Throughout February, COBS Bread collected customer donations at the cash register to support the hospice. Fundraising efforts culminated in "Doughnation Day" on March 2, where $2 from every six-pack of hot cross buns purchased was pledged to the local charity.
COBS Bread North Bay also held a "Free Bread for a Year" draw. Patrons were invited to contribute $5 for a draw ticket, or five tickets for a $20 donation.
Today COBS North Bay owners, Shawn O’Neil and Carrie MacDonald presented Nipissing Serenity Hospice’s Fund Development Coordinator, Bernadette Lindsay, with a cheque for $6,300.
"The overwhelming display of community spirit in North Bay fills our hearts with warmth," said Lindsay.
Below is a tour of the facility at 799 John Street. Opened in 2020, it is a bilingual 10-bed residential hospice "providing a peaceful, caring and supportive environment that embraces all without discrimination."
It is a place where quality end-of-life care is honoured in a compassionate and holistic manner. "We strive to meet spiritual, psycho-social and physical needs to relieve pain and suffering for both residents and their families 24/7."
