A group of grade two students at Alliance Public School saw a nearly year-long project come to fruition today.

Jean Chasse’s class has been working on this unique fundraiser since October.  It started with making origami ornaments sold as Christmas decorations and then after Christmas, the students worked on creative laminated bookmarks and fridge magnets that they sold around the school at various events.

In total, the young students no older than eight raised $290.00 which will go towards helping a school in Tanzania.

Eight-year-old Tom Lawson enjoyed taking part.

“Because I think the people at Tanzania are happy for it and we think that too,” said Tom.

Chasse was impressed with what this young class achieved.

“I think it is a pretty big feat for 7 and 8-year-olds to come up with an idea and make it grow,” he said.

“To take an idea and make a thing and make a change for someone across the world is pretty neat.”

Emily Samuels is a former teacher at Alliance, and the founder of the local Friends of Machochwe charity, which has been raising money for the school since 2015.

Since then, the program has helped the school with a Water-Tank, school desks and an end of school celebration feast.

Samuels is thrilled to see the North Bay students step up for the cause.

“These kids had an idea that they wanted to create change, they wanted to create a visible impact and they were able to do that through Friends of Machochwe and as you can see it has kind of snowballed from there,” said Samuels.

“I am so pleased they are kids and they are changing other kids lives, I think that is amazing,”
