Canada's Defence Minister Bill Blair came to the defence of Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota today during a media conference unveiling the new Health Services Centre at CFB North Bay.
This was Anthony Rota's first public appearance since he stepped down as Speaker of the House on September 28 amid international controversy after he invited a North Bay resident, Yaroslave Hunka, who fought for the Nazis, to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president a few days earlier.

"I did make a statement in the chamber and afterwards but today we are here to discuss the new Health Services Centre," Rota said responding to a question.
Blair defended Rota when he was asked about his absence from question period since the incident took place.
"I have known Anthony Rota for very many years," said Blair.
"He is a dear friend and I also look to him as a mentor and an incredible example of public service. All the years that I have known him he has been an extraordinary advocate and representative of this community and continues to be."
The Defence Minister was in North Bay to mark the opening of the new $22-million Health Services Centre at 22 Wing CFB North Bay.
