Police have updated with additional information.
Further investigation has determined that Roland Bellaire, 49 was operating his snow machine over open water on Lake Nosbonsing when he failed to make it across safely.
Bystanders located a canoe and rescued him from the waters.
They brought him to shore where they performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
North Bay and District Ambulance Service and the Bonfield volunteer fire department also attended the scene to assist with the investigation.
The North Bay OPP urges all snowmobilers to stay off of lakes and rivers as the ice conditions change very quickly and can be very unpredictable this time of year.

Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 3:00 p.m., OPP got a call of a person who had gone through the ice on Lake Nosbonsing,at the end of Church Street in Bonfield Township.
Roland Bellaire, age 49, of Bonfield Township, was crossing Lake Nosbonsing when his snowmobile went through the ice. Witness reports say the sled hit open water.
North Bay Emergency Medical Services arrived and rushed Bellaire to hospital with life threatening injuries, where he later died of those injuries.
