Getting goals from five different skaters, the Powassan Voodoos went on to defeat the Soo Eagles 5-1 Sunday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Generating the game’s first tally, 16 minutes into the match-up, the Voodoos’ Ryan Saginaw led a rush into the Eagles’ end and after working his way around a defender, put a pass across to Owen Kahl, who cut to his right and tucked in his eighth goal of the season, beating Sault Ste. Marie starter Jace Knoerle.
Coming right back, Powassan went up by a pair when Marcus Krats snapped in a shot from along the right side boards.
Heading to the middle stanza, the home side carried their cushion into the second intermission, buoyed by killing off multiple man advantage opportunities the Eagles had in the session.
Third period play saw the Voodoos extend their lead at 5:07 when Eric Whitelaw made a rush into Soo territory, then fire a shot that was stopped, but Anthony Boyes swooped in to pump the rebound upstairs on Knoerle.
The Eagles eventually solved Powassan starter Tyson Wilcox with nine minutes remaining after Gabriel Clark redirected in a Liam Watson wrister from the point.
Getting their goalkeeper out with plenty of time remaining, the visitors looked to get closer with an additional skater.
However, the hosts iced the win with 2:22 to go when Justin Rousseau lifted one into the empty net from just over the centre ice red line.
The Voodoos then saw Daniil Viscu wrap things up with another empty netter from the neutral zone to round out the scoring.
The win improves the Voodoos record on the season to 19-14-0-5 as they six in sixth place in the 12-team league.
